1998 was a wonderful year.
Late in 1997 I had yet another hypo-manic episode. Three days after returning to work I got the “don’t come Monday” (Redundancy). “This was nothing to do with your illness” I was told. Yea, right. I had worked 32 years for that one company.
Well, that was it for me. It was time to manage my manic depressive disorder. I had become fed up with it controlling me. It was time to take control of my life. During 1998 I worked on my bipolar. By year end I was confident that I had learnt how to beat bipolar. Since then I have not had a single manic depressive episode. For me this was an amazing result.
This leads on to some very important news for you. Yes, this year can become a wonderful year for you! You can learn how to manage your bipolar. By simply doing so you can take control of you life. You, too, can achieve amazing results.
Yes, YOU can MANAGE BIPOLAR. You can CONTROL YOUR LIFE.
I am impressed by his book. .Speaking from his own experience he is on very firm ground. Writing in a clear concise way he shares the knowledge of measures he has found helpful . He has also researched and found other approaches readers can explore.
I recommend this book because I believe people with bipolar disorder and their friends & families will get a lot out of it. Ray has shared his very personal experiences that enables this book to communicate on a very human level. This approach makes it much more user friendly than a textbook.

Yes, I can help YOU.
A few years went by. I remained free of manic depressive episodes. Wouldn’t you like to be free of bipolar episodes yourself? Wouldn’t that be amazing?
I asked myself, why was this happening? I gave that question serious thought. Support groups were part of my life. Here I met people controlled by their bipolar. I also met people who managed their bipolar rather successfully.
I gave further thought as to why I remained symptom free. Why was I in control of my life? How does anyone manager their manic depressive disorder. I talked to my friends at my support group. A pattern emerged. Those friends who managed their bipolar successfully had good knowledge of the disorder. I looked at myself. Certainly, it was true of me. It can be true for you, too. You can put the worst days of you disorder behind you.
Your loved ones can help you manage your bipolar!
Not only can I help you. Your loved ones can help you manage your bipolar manic depressive disorder. There is a simple explanation for this. Friends and loved ones of some one with bipolar can have a very important role to play. They can help their loved one manage bipolar. They can offer you support in the following ways:
- By letting you know that they will be here when they are needed
- By being there when they are needed.
- By knowing you.
- By recognizing changes in you. By doing so they can often see an oncoming episode ahead of you. This is particularly true in respect of an oncoming hypo-manic episode. As you know you can consider these as great experiences. There is often a tendency for you to deny they are being experienced.
- By working, together with you, when you are in full control of your life.
- By helping you make plans when you are in full control of your life. These plans should cover what actions are to be taken as you enter a manic or depressive episode.
- By knowing what to do if you become so depressed you become suicidal. Plans should be made when you are in charge of your life. Such plans can save panic. Such plans, made in advance, can save your life.
It is important that people whose loved one has bipolar learn to understand the disorder. This is not only to help them protect you. It is also important because such knowledge will make their life more manageable for them, your loved ones.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IS THAT THIS NEED NOT BE THE CASE FOR YOU!
How many people does it afflict?
The American National Institute of Mental Health statistics indicate that about 2.6% of the American population over the age of 18 show signs of bipolar disorder in any given year. It affects men and women equally. World wide statistics generally indicates a similar level of affliction.
Diagnosis
American psychiatrists have very specific guidelines to use in diagnosing Bipolar disorder. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must meet the criteria spelled out in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). This manual is published by the American Psychiatric Association. It is used by mental health providers to diagnose mental conditions. It is also used by insurance companies to reimburse for treatment. Diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder are based on a specific diagnosis for each type of bipolar disorder. There are separate criteria for different types of the disorder. These criteria are very specific for each type.
Once diagnosed with it the diagnosis remains with you for life. The problems it presents do not have to. Learn how to manage bipolar. Learn how to take control of your life. If your desire is strong enough you will achieve it.
What causes bipolar?
As yet Scientists have not specifically identified what causes the disorder. There are many areas currently being researched. This research is very important for you. Knowing the exact cause will lead to better treatments.
Broadly speaking the causes being investigated fall into three main areas:
- Biochemical causes.
- Genetic causes
- Environmental causes
Much research has been conducted. Studies have linked all three of the above causes to many people with bipolar. Many studies have linked subjects to common factors in each of the three areas of study. One problem is that other mental disorders are often seen to be linked with the same common factors. Currently common thinking is amongst scientist is that some people are more prone to bipolar because of biochemical and genetic factors. It is thought that bipolar episodes are then triggered by environmental factors.
In the February 24th 2011 edition of the American Journal of Human Genetics a study was published. This study was headed by the renowned German Genealogist Sven Cichon. They found that genetic variation in the gene neurocan (NCAN) showed a significant association with bipolar disorder in thousands of patients. Thus one more piece has been added to the puzzle.
Treatments.
Bipolar is managed by a range of treatments. .
- It is managed by knowledge.
- It is managed by medication.
- It is managed by talk therapies.
- It is managed by loving support.
- It is managed by your relationships.
- It is managed by the shared experiences of support groups.
- It is managed by you knowing your early warning signs and being willing to take action when you see them come into play.
- Most of all it is managed by your DESIRE to control it.
Treatment of bipolar is a mix and match experience. Treatment varies from person to person. For a treatment to be successful for you it will be unique to you. It is a combination of some, or all, of the above factors.
There is one important fact for you to know about bipolar. The diagnosis might be for life. However, the problem does not have to be so. The important fact for you to know is that it can treated!!! Bipolar can be managed.
Suicide
Bipolar Manic Depressive disorder leads to a far greater than normal risk of suicide than the general population. One of the major risk factors for suicide is major depression. Do you see the connection here? You have the disorder. You have a greater than normal risk of major depression. Hence you have a greater than normal risk of attempted suicide or suicide. Of course, there are also other factors to be taken into account.
The American Nation Institute of Mental Health state one person in five with Manic depressive disorder successfully completes suicide.
Dr Wes Burgess wrote the following about suicide in his book, The Bipolar Handbook: Real-Life Questions with Up to Date Answers, Penguin 2006:
“30% of individuals with bipolar disorder will attempt suicide during their lives, and 20% will succeed . . . . Suicide is more common in bipolar depression than in unipolar major depression, panic disorder, or even schizophrenia. HOWEVER, THE SUICIDE RATE GOES DOWN DRAMATICALLY WITH ADEQUATE TREATMENT“.
Again, this gives great hope for you.

Just sat here and read your book. I think it is a very gusty step for you to front up as you have done and share your experiences, warts and all. The description of the fist in windows act mirrors my twin sisters (yep, both of them!) behavior from their teens, one has been diagnosed as bipolar and the other should have but she lives in a world where she is only one marching to the right tune. This lady has a trail of destroyed relationships, parents, sisters, husbands, boyfriends, kids and grandkids plus many friends who have walked away for her outbursts and violence. As her sister I tried so many to intercede for her but she is the one who has to accept assistance and medical intervention intervention, the ultimate step is up to her but we are the ones with any problems—not her
